Important Day in August

August 28, St. Mary's Day (Mariamoba)

Mariamoba honors Mary, the mother of Jesus, who ascended into heaven after dying. Numerous Georgians attend the special services that churches across the nation offer. The Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia conducts the largest one, which is held in Tbilisi.

Religious Georgians abstain from eating meat (including fish), dairy products, and eggs for the two weeks leading up to the holiday. On Mariamoba, the fast is broken with a sizable family and communal feast.
